Japanese Calligraphy – ‘festival’

This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.

Festival:    祭 (matsuri)

Celebrate the beauty of Japanese culture and calligraphy this March 3rd as we host a special workshop inspired by the kanji 祭 (matsuri), meaning “festival” or “ceremony.” This session is uniquely tied to Hinamatsuri (雛祭り), Japan’s Doll Festival, celebrated on this day to wish happiness and health for young girls. Rooted in ancient Shinto traditions, Hinamatsuri embodies rituals and aesthetics that bring peace and harmony to life. The kanji 祭 reflects the essence of festivals—moments of gathering, celebration, and spiritual connection. It resonates with our March theme, Visions and Illusions, as traditional Japanese festivals often blend reality with mysticism, offering a fleeting yet profound experience that feels both tangible and otherworldly. Join this workshop and enjoy this unique opportunity to connect with Japanese traditions while exploring the interplay between ceremony, vision, and illusion.
