This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Intelligence, skill: 知能 (chinō)
We invite you to our next Japanese Calligraphy workshop, where we’ll focus on the kanji 知能 (chinō)—a word that combines knowledge (知) and ability or function (能), often translated as intelligence, mental ability, or even skill. In Japanese culture, 知能 goes beyond just IQ or intellectual achievement—it reflects one’s capacity to understand, adapt, and respond to the world thoughtfully and effectively. As part of our monthly theme, Intelligence and Intuition, this workshop will guide us in exploring the balance between cognitive skill and intuitive action, and how that duality is deeply embedded in Japanese language and values. Come practice the graceful strokes of this powerful kanji and reflect on how we cultivate and express our own intelligence—through both the mind and the heart.
This event is exclusively for LEVEL members. You can become a member, or alternatively, purchase a trial ticket below.
