Gaming realities: how play reflects and reshapes society

This talk explores the intersection of gaming and sociology, thinking about how games can reflect and shape our societal understanding. From a sociological perspective, games are not just entertainment, they are microcosms of the real world, revealing and producing insights about cooperation, conflict, and inequality. Focusing on different real-life examples, we will discuss how games can perpetuate inequality through exclusionary practices. At the same, time, we will see how they also hold potential as tools for education and social change, incentivising positive behaviours and fostering critical thinking on societal issues.
