This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Desire, craving: 欲
The kanji “欲” (yoku) describes greed, desire, craving, and want in Japanese. It represents powerful sense of longing or yearning for something, whether it be material possessions, emotional satisfaction, or physical pleasures. This character reflects a fundamental aspect of human experience—the intense drive and often insatiable nature of our desires. In the context of Buddhism, “欲” is viewed through a more critical lens. It represents one of the core challenges on the path to enlightenment and inner peace, as unchecked desire is believed to lead to suffering and dissatisfaction. Join this calligraphy session and explore the complex nature of “欲” it influences behavior, societal values, and spiritual practices.
