This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Dream: mu/ yume (夢)
“Dream” or “yume” holds a special place in Japanese culture and is deeply intertwined with the idea of spirituality and the subconscious mind. In Japanese folklore, dreams are believed to be gateways to the spiritual world, and dreams are seen as a manifestation of one’s deepest desires and fears. They are often considered to have a powerful influence on a person’s life, providing insight and guidance. In popular culture, the theme of dreams and their powerful impact on reality is a recurring motif in anime, manga, and other forms of media. Overall, the concept of “yume” holds a profound and mysterious place in Japanese culture, capturing the essence of imagination, spirituality, and the power of the mind.
