This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
New: 新
The Japanese concept of ‘Shin, Atarashii,’ meaning ‘new,’ has a strong significance, especially in the context of the New Year. Embracing the advent of a fresh start, this concept encourages reflection, renewal, and the pursuit of innovation. As the New Year unfolds, ‘Shin, Atarashii’ prompts a collective aspiration for positive change and growth. Beyond the specific ties to the New Year, the Japanese people associate the idea of ‘new’ with broader meanings. It signifies a continuous cycle of improvement, adaptation, and a commitment to embracing novel ideas. 新 encourages a forward-looking mindset, inspiring individuals to approach life with a sense of openness to new experiences, ideas, and possibilities. It beautifully encapsulates the Japanese cultural ethos of honouring tradition while remaining receptive to the ever-evolving dynamics of the ‘new.’
