This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Secret: 秘
In Japanese culture, the concept represented by the Kanji symbol 秘 delves into the depths of the human psyche, describing a realm of hidden truths, mysterious forces, and the unknown aspects of existence. The kanji 秘 not only characterises secrets concealed from view but also describes the enigmatic forces that lie beyond human comprehension. This character recognises the delicate vulnerability inherent in human nature and acknowledges limitations of human understanding. 秘 connects us to the boundless mysteries that surround us and the humility required to navigate the complexities of existence.
