Japanese Calligraphy – ‘shodo’

This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.

Way of writing:    書道 (shodo)

We are delighted to announce our next Japanese Calligraphy workshop, where we will explore the kanji 書道 (shodō), meaning “The Way of Writing.” More than just a skill, shodō represents a profound cultural practice deeply embedded in Japanese tradition. It is not merely about forming characters but about expressing harmony, discipline, and mindfulness through each brushstroke. This art form embodies the philosophy of connecting the mind, body, and spirit, transforming writing into a meditative and creative journey. In this session, participants will practice writing shodō with traditional tools while gaining a deeper appreciation of its cultural and philosophical importance. Join us for a meaningful exploration of this timeless art form!
