Japanese Calligraphy – ‘the year of snake’

This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.

Year of Snake:    å·³å¹´ (Hebi-doshi)

We are thrilled to announce our first Japanese Calligraphy workshop in 2025! In this session, we will explore the kanji 巳年 (Hebi-doshi), representing the Year of the Snake in the Japanese zodiac. Together, we will appreciate the spirit of the new year’s sign, diving into its rich symbolism and the broader zodiac system. Additionally, we’ll reflect on how time is perceived in Japanese culture, connecting it to our January theme, Passage of Time. This workshop promises to be a creative and insightful way to welcome 2025. Join us to embrace the art of calligraphy and the deeper meanings behind this beautiful tradition!
