This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Thing: mono (物)
物 (mono) is a Japanese word that refers to a physical object or thing. It can also be used to describe an entity, substance, or material. In Japanese culture and philosophy, the concept of mono can be extended beyond the physical realm to include intangible things such as ideas, emotions, and relationships. The term mono no aware, for example, refers to the bittersweet feeling of impermanence and the transience of things in life. Overall, the word mono connotes a sense of tangible or intangible existence that is part of the fabric of the world around us.
