This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Year: å¹´
The Japanese concept of å¹´ ‘Nen, Toshi,’ encapsulating the idea of ‘year,’ is closely tied to the essence of time, renewal, and cyclicality. As the New Year approaches, ‘Nen, Toshi’ takes centre stage, symbolising not only the passage of time but also the opportunity for fresh beginnings. It invites individuals to reflect on the experiences of the past year, fostering a sense of gratitude and learning. The concept extends beyond the specific New Year celebration, embodying a broader understanding of ‘new’ in the Japanese cultural context. ‘Nen, Toshi’ underscores the cyclical nature of life, emphasising the perpetual renewal and growth that each passing year brings. It encourages a collective embrace of the ‘new,’ urging individuals to approach each year with a spirit of optimism, resilience, and an openness to the opportunities for personal and communal advancement that the unfolding year presents.
