In Greek mythology, tricksters have always played an important role, often using humour to bring about wisdom. Baubo makes the goddess Demeter laugh by exposing herself, ending Demeter’s long period of mourning over the loss of her daughter, Persephone. Gelos was the personification of laughter in other Greek myths. Why has humour always been an essential element when human beings try to make sense of the world around them? Join us as we explore the role of humour and laughter in ancient mythology and meaning-making.
