Spirituality has long been a wellspring of inspiration for contemporary artists, guiding them to explore the realms beyond the tangible and the seen. By blending their creative expressions with the spiritual, contemporary artists infuse their works with a profound depth that resonates on both aesthetic and soulful levels, inviting viewers to contemplate the mysteries of the divine and the interconnectedness of the human spirit.
During this talk, looking at a selection of artists working across different mediums, we will explore how religion and spirituality have been addressed by contemporary artists between the 1950s and today. We will dive into the spiritually awe-inspiring paintings by Mark Rothko, the spectacular installations of James Turrell, Damien Hirst’s distinct take on religious motifs and Kehinde Wiley’s new renditions of traditional Christian iconography.
