In celebration of this month’s Valentine’s Day, we decided to explore the theme of love, passion and care. We will explore the multifarious nature of love from the erotic and manipulative to the immersive and Divine.
Language of Anti-Racism
Language is a living thing and an important element of social activism. It is utilised to adhere to the social codes by cultural organisations, supposedly representing the people it serves. However, that representation of language needs further interrogation, because anti-racist terminology is often utilised for different reasons and overtime, shifts in meaning.Â
Japanese Calligraphy: 梅 Ume
The 4th winter session will focus on character 梅 Ume (Plum blossom) and explore The Art of Ume. Ume is known as the flower of February which starts blossoming at the end of winter in Japan. It is a special flower that has been a popular theme of Japanese paintings and poetry for centuries. Ume symbolises perseverance and hope, as well as beauty, purity, and the transitoriness of life.
Japanese Calligraphy: 雪Yuki
The 3rd winter session will focus on character 雪 Yuki (Snow) and explore The Art of Winter.
Japanese Calligraphy: 松 Matsu
The 2nd winter session will focus on character 松 Matsu (Pine tree) and explore The Art of Matsu. Matsu is a Japanese auspicious tree and iconic symbol that represents longevity, youth, eternity and power. Matsu is especially used at the beginning of the year as a New Year decoration.
Japanese Calligraphy: 初Hatsu
This 1st winter session of Japanese Calligraphy series will focus on character 初 - Hatsu (Hajime) and explore The Art of Beginning. The concept of a new beginning is symbolic and is surrounded by various practices. The start of the new year represents new beginnings to the Japanese, which signifies the best time to refresh one’s blessings, recite prayers and reflect on wishes for the coming days.
