Freedom of Expression: Art vs. Mass Media

In this session we will primarily focus on the careers of two major artists who made a huge impact on art in the second half of the 20th century – Gerhard Richter and Andy Warhol. Starting by looking at the Cold War Politics of the 1960s and 70s and the role of the media during this tumultuous time, we will see how painters interrogated the reliability of the images around them. At a time when photographs, captions and reference images in the news could no longer be trusted, these artists created relevant works that are just as important today. Through the careful selection of source images, Richter and Warhol raised a mirror to society and led audiences to challenge the ‘information’ provided by the media.
