Narrative as an Interactive Practice Across Visual and Digital Media

This session will consider how the art of storytelling has always been an interactive transactional process between two agents: media and recipient. Reading or early silent cinema historically relies on audiences to work, making cognitive sense of what they see or interpret in order to access story. Digital media from DVD’s, social media and computer gaming has expanded and reconfigured this interactive process, putting storytelling into new relationships with the body as we as the mind. From instances of co-evolutionary narrative in digital media art and computer gaming, through to ideas of self-journalism in online posts, this session will consider the ways in which narrative and interactive spectators have evolved into digital co-creators of story based content. It will also discuss why story is so significant to our understanding of media and the world around us. Drawing on examples of film, gaming, installation art, fonts and video essay work, this session will be an introduction to the significance of story and digital media as an interactive art form.
