Contemporary Expressions of Love and Loss

We will be exploring how the theme of Love and Loss comes to light in the works by two of the greatest British artists of the 20th century: Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon.

Both painters predominantly focused on portraiture throughout their prolific careers, and naturally, frequently chose to paint those closest to them. Love, lust, obsession and torment generate gripping compositions in the oeuvres of these pioneers of art. Talking not just of love between partners but also dear friends and family members, we will see how, through their canvases, we gain a window into their emotional and personal lives.
