Is there some sort of secret code to understanding historic works of art? This talk gives a brief history of how art historians began to study ‘disguised symbols’ in art and explains how viewers can develop their skills of art interpretation. We will examine the visual language employed by artists often rooted in cultural, religious, historical, or societal contexts to communicate complex ideas within their creations. Looking at a variety of artworks we explore how the objects in an artwork tell stories far beyond their form.
