Nowadays, 56% of the world’s population lives in cities, and about half of them are female. Still, most cities have been largely designed and built by men, and for men. From street naming conventions to toilets and public spaces, to participatory planning processes, how is gender represented within our urban space? What can we learn from cities at the forefront of gender mainstreaming practices such as Vienna and Barcelona? And now, can the promises of a “smart” city contribute to reducing the existing inequalities and developing real gender-inclusive cities?

SPEAKER – LAURA SILVA
Laura Silva is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the Center for Research on Social Inequalities(CRIS) at Sciences Po in Paris and affiliated to the Centre for Social Science Research (CSSR) at the University of Cape Town. She works at the intersection of urban dynamics, neighbourhood and gender inequalities and urban social innovation.
