This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Cove: 江 e
In Japanese culture, the concept of “cove” holds a profound significance that extends beyond its natural and geographical connotations. A cove in Japanese, is more than just a sheltered inlet along the coastline; it encapsulates a harmonious blend of tranquility, beauty, and introspection. Symbolizing a haven of serenity, coves are often depicted in traditional art forms such as ukiyo-e prints, capturing their ethereal charm and the delicate interplay between land and sea. This notion of a cove extends metaphorically to represent moments of respite amidst life’s tempests, where one can seek solace and self-discovery. Just as the physical cove offers protection from the crashing waves, the concept metaphorically illustrates the cultural emphasis on finding balance, seeking refuge, and appreciating the hidden gems within life’s intricate tapestry. Whether in artistic expressions, literature, or everyday life, the Japanese appreciation for coves mirrors their profound understanding of the delicate equilibrium between nature, self, and society.
