Matter Matters? Contemporary Art on Materialism

How do ethics come into art? This session we will take a look at a broad range of Contemporary artists who, in their own ways, question the world they live in and draw attention to some of the key issues in our society right now. Through the eyes of Basquiat and Banksy we will see how questions around the commodification of art itself have been raised by artists at the heart of this topic. Then, we will look at how art has been used by two installation artists – James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson to promote more spiritual topics or raise awareness about the fragility of our surroundings. We will see examples of paintings, street art and monumental land sculptures by some of the key figures of Contemporary Art.
