The art of writing is the art of finding meaning. And meaning is subjective and personal. How do writers convey their meaning to reach out to a universal audience? How do artists do the same? In this hour-long talk, we will take a look at two things: images as writing prompts and creative nonfiction as a literary technique in the craft of life writing. We will take a look at how one art form feeds into the other.
SPEAKER – EVA WONG NAVA
Eva Wong Nava was born on a tropical island where a merlion spurts water. Her ancestors braved monsoon winds sailing to British Malaya to plant roots in Southeast Asia. When the winds changed, they sailed again and found another home somewhere in the western hemisphere. She combines degrees in literature and art history and writes stories that explore identity, culture, and belonging. Eva has written an award-winning middle-grade novel and several picture-books. She has given talks at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content and several other places on representation in children’ books, decolonising literature and writing about difficult topics. Eva is an advocate for diversity and inclusion in children’s literature. She has a forthcoming YA novel to be published by the Penguin Random House Group and picture-books to be published by Walker Books UK. During the Pandemic, she embarked on a Masters in Children’s Literature at the University of Roehampton. She blogs about art and children’s books and is the co-founder of Picture Book Matters, a mentoring programme for aspiring and emerging picture-book creators. When not writing for children, Eva facilitates creative writing courses — Telling Our Stories with Art(e)Facts — where she uses images to prompt memoir writing and personal stories. She is the founder and managing editor of CarpeArte Journal, an online magazine where art and stories intersect. Eva lives in London with her family, two scampering squirrels, and a regal fox.
