In this lecture, we will explore the work of the German contemporary artist Gerhard Richter, who has many times in his career been seen as an “outsider” by the art world. Despite his more recent status as one of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, Richter has often resisted being categorized or associated with any particular artistic movement or style. Instead, his work is defined by its diversity: ranging from photo-realistic paintings to abstract compositions, and from colossal paintings to intimate compositions.

Through an examination of Richter’s life and work, we will explore how Richter’s unique perspective has allowed him to challenge traditional artistic conventions and push the boundaries of what art can be. We will also examine the ways in which his work reflects his personal experiences and the broader socio-political contexts in which he has lived and worked.

Whether you are a seasoned art enthusiast or simply curious about the work of one of the most innovative artists of our time, this lecture promises to provide a fascinating glimpse into the life and work of Gerhard Richter, and the many ways in which he has redefined what it means to be an “outsider” in the world of art.
