Contemporary Artists Responding to a Changing World & New Technologies

In this session we will look at how artists since the 1960s until present day, have been exploring the changing world around them and specifically embracing or critiquing rising technologies. Looking at American Pop artists we will see how the rise of mass-produced commodities impacted their own methods of working and the subject matters that consumed them. After this, we will see how contemporary artist David Hockney broke the boundaries of painting over the past five years by inventing new techniques on the iPad which allow him to create works outdoors, in his old age. From there, we will explore how the African contemporary painter Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, shows his own personal skepticism of modernisation specifically across the Democratic Republic of Congo – linking the increasing industrialisation, with the consequent annihilation of historic rituals and traditions of the Congolese people.
