Coinciding with a major retrospective exhibition at The National Gallery in London, this talk will focus on one of the best-loved figurative painters of the 20th century – Lucian Freud. The grandson of Sigmund Freud, Lucian was born in Berlin in 1922, but when Hitler became chancellor in 1933, he and his parents fled to England. From a young age, he exhibited a talent for drawing and as time passed, he became one of the most prominent painters on the London-scene alongside Francis Bacon and Frank Auerbach. Having painted portraits of renowned figures like the Rothschilds, David Hockney and even the late Queen, his position as one of the best-known portrait painters was solidified.
