What good is sex? This talk draws on the work of Lauren Berlant (1957-2021), a leading theorist of sexuality, politics, and culture, to think about the place of sex and the erotic in contemporary culture. In tandem with Berlant, it explores desire, fantasy, and the affective disturbances that always accompany intimately felt encounters. Thinking with or through moments in films such as Paris in Tango (1973) and 20th Century Women (2016), the talk also addresses the relationship between sexual and revolutionary politics, and (sexual) desire’s capacity to reorganise worlds.

Speaker: Lilly Markaki

Lilly Markaki is a cultural theorist and curator moving between London and Athens. Adopting an interdisciplinary, transversal theoretical approach, their research investigates material and speculative aesthetic practices, placing particular emphasis on questions that relate to art’s world-making (and unwordling) capacities. Lilly holds a PhD in Media Arts (RHUL, 2022) and an MLitt (Research) and B.A. (Hons) in Art History (University of Glasgow, 2013 & 2014). Among other things, they currently work as an Associate Lecturer at RCA and UAL, and as a Researcher and Programme Curator at DEMO Moving Image Experimental Politics.
