This is a series of workshops designed by Azumi Uchitani to explore Japanese culture through the art of calligraphy and language. We will meet bi-weekly, slowly moving from season to season and uncovering new characters, rituals, concepts and beliefs deeply rooted in Japanese lifestyle. Each event we will centre around a new symbol: we will learn its meaning, discuss a poem about it, meditate and experience the power of the concept through calligraphy practice.
Kind, gentle: 優
The kanji “優” is a powerful symbol in Japanese culture, embodying both excellence and gentleness. This character reflects qualities of being considerate and caring. When the kanji “優” is used as part of the word “優しい” (yasashii), it often describes someone who is compassionate, gentle, and nurturing by nature. The dual meanings of this character—kind and excellent—reveal an interesting interplay in Japanese cultural values. Kindness is not only a personal virtue but also seen as an aspect of overall excellence. In this context, “優” highlights how being gentle and considerate is integral to the concept of achieving true excellence. Join us as we explore the significance of this kanji and practice drawing this character.
