Ancestral veneration is one of the oldest spiritual practices on the planet. Time honoured traditions of venerating and remembering those who have come before us, the dead and the long forgotten span across pre-colonial spiritual practices, seep into neo pseudo religious cult, saint followings and nearly every known culture across the globe. In this talk we explore what it means to honour or venerate one's ancestors.

Culling from children literature, old folks stories, Disney cartoons and grim fairy tales, artist Paula Rego juxtaposes fantasy and reality, innocence and cruelty, to depict the contradictions of human life. By confronting the personal and the political, the artist explores complex political issues and personal family tragedies, putting women and girls at the forefront of her grotesque narratives.ÂÂ

What can art, from the time of British colonialism, tell us about history and culture then and now? How has Imperial expansion shaped our perceptions of power, greatness and our understanding of nationhood? Join us for a discussion of a selection of famous British art works. We will unravel how they have influenced our perceptions of culture, beauty and heritage and still do in society today. We will also challenge that notion, in a study of some of contemporary art's responses, that bring the Great British narrative into question.
